#HAWMC Days 13-19: Shimmying my way to a stress-free, perfect comeback

Day 13: Perfect Comeback

Eight years ago, I was struck by a rare kind of bacterial infection. After an exposure trip in an informal settler community, I began to feel difficulty in chewing my food. The next day, I have swollen lymph nodes below my earlobes and aside from that it is getting more and more painful.

So I decided together with my mom to go to the nearest public hospital to treat whatever it I have.

Upon arrival at the Mandaluyong public hospital in Boni Avenue, I went straight to the emergency room to have my lymph nodes checked. My first suspicion was that I have mumps. I was in pain at that time so I thought I will be treated right away.

To my utter dismay, the nurses in the ER didn’t do anything, didn’t even checked me, nothing. And the’y even have the audacity to tell me to just go back the next day when the doctor is around since the doctor on duty for that day was still having lunch at 2PM.

Because of my painful condition, I got really angry and frustrated at that time and waited for the doctor impatiently.

Finally, he arrived and checked on me. While he was checking me, he told me if I was the one acting like a crazy person in the ER and I told him that I am not acting crazy but the fact that the nurses didn’t know how to treat a patient with pain, to tell the patient to go back until the doctor arrives and did not even move a budge to check on what’s wrong with the patient only means one thing – POOR SERVICE.

After the doctor treated me, which was only giving me meds not really curing me with whatever I have, I left but went back to the ER and gave the staff my word and let them know of their poor service.

When you’re serving a public hospital, it doesn’t mean that your service should be low quality. In fact, it should be the other way around and give the best service to the people whom you’re supposedly serving and in fact paying your salary through taxes.

Day 14: I feel best “often” when

 …i bellydance/dance

…i discover/learn new things about health both personal and advocacy

…i am assigned to do new tasks about my advocacy

…i receive recognition for my work.

Day 15: Get Excited!

The same way as Day 14, I get excited when I dance, discover/learn new things, assigned new tasks ahead and receive recognition for the work I do.

These are the things that revs me up and make me continue what I love doing, which is advocacy work and writing for health.

Day 16: My 10-year old self (Life Goal)

When I 10 years old, I dreamt of becoming a nun simply because I want to serve the Lord. However, I don’t believe I can already do that now. My priorities have changed and I am already married.

Actually, I found other ways to serve my Lord and that is through my advocacy and writing.

Day 17: Health Tagline

Eversince I started my health activism, my tagline has already been this…

Need I say more.

Day 18: Summer is Coming

Honestly, I am not much of a summer lover. I don’t like the heat especially with climate change around the corner all the time. However, if I’m to ask what I miss about it – it is to be with family in an outing or a gathering in a beach, somewhere where it is cold or just within the comforts of our own home with good food and conversation.

Day 19: Shaking off the Stress through Shimmies

keep-calm-and-shimmy-on-12

April is Stress Awareness Month. What do I do when I’m stress? First things first, stress is something neutral, now what you do about your stress is the crucial one. Knowing how to deal with it prevents you from taking in the stress in the negative way.

As for me, I shimmy away the stress through dancing, bellydance or any other dance so that I am able to release the stress in a creative way.
